Frequently Asked Questions

  • Q - What is TLC?
  • A - The simple objective is for Freemasons to provide Teddy Bears and soft toys to Accident & Emergency, and Paediatric units, for the medical staff to give (at their discretion) to children admitted who are in severe distress - and where the staff feel that a Teddy or soft toy to cuddle will help alleviate the stress and assist them in their critical work.
  • Q - How are funds raised?
  • A -Selling teddy badges and key rings; selling special fundraising (logo) bears; social events; talks to organisations and Masonic Lodges; donations from individuals and groups
  • Q - Do the children keep the Teddy?
  • A - YES, they take the Teddy home with them.
  • Q - How did it start?
  • A - The idea began following the resuscitation of the wife of an Essex Freemason at an Essex A & E unit after an allergic reaction, which closed her windpipe. They both found the experience the most frightening of their lives and are eternally grateful for the swift and caring attention that she received.

The husband in question,  discussed with his Masonic Lodge the idea of 'trying to do something useful' as a thank you to the A&E unit and its staff. From that point onwards the idea of Teddies for Loving Care was born. All Essex Freemasons and A&E units are involved, and this has extended to include Freemasons and A&E units in 30 other English Counties.
  • Q - What do the hospitals think?
  • A - They think it is a wonderful idea. Some quotes from the staff:

"A Wonderful idea and Contribution to Humanity".
" We don't know how we used to cope without the Teddies".
"We hope that Freemasons will continue to help us with Teddies for many years".

To date over 1,000,000 distressed children, parents and siblings at A&E units have been comforted with a TLC Teddy.
  • Q - What about safety?
  • A - All our teddies are tested to ensure they fully comply with the latest safety standards.
  • Q - Is this a public appeal?
  • A - As a charity, we do not turn down donations from others who see the benefits of the idea, but over 90% of the money needed is donated by Freemasons, friends and families.
  • Q - How many Teddies are involved?
  • A - Around 70,000 teddies each year in England and the number is growing.
This means that around 500,000 distressed children, parents, families and friends are now helped, and touched by the TLC Appeal, each year.
  • Q - How much of the TLC money goes on administration?
  • A - Absolutely nothing, as time and facilities are donated. Though we may spend a minimal amount, less than 1%, on fundraising and PR, otherwise every penny of the remainder is used to purchase the Teddies soft toys or urgently needed paediatric equipment for A&E units.
  • Q - What if I have some other questions? Or want to donate?
  • A - If you have any further questions, Graham Riche - Chairman of the Charity - will be happy to answer them. You can get in touch with Graham, and other members of the Charity, via the 'Contacts button' on the main menu of the site.

If you want to donate to the Charity, and thank you for your generosity, simply click on the 'donation Heart' in the right-hand column and the donation process will be explained.
